What is a Registered Dietitian?
-
A Registered Dietitian (RDN) is a credentialed practitioner with expertise in food and nutrition. RDNs are licensed to provide nutrition education and counseling to individuals and groups. RDNs can also provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for nutrition-related medical conditions.
What’s the difference between a nutritionist and a Registered Dietitian?
-
There are no consistent educational or professional standards to use this title; anyone can call themselves a nutritionist. Unlike RDNs, nutritionists are not accountable to a national licensing organization or board of ethics.
-
Registered Dietitians are required to complete thorough academic and professional training, including:
-
Master’s degree from an accredited dietetics program, with coursework in food science, human nutrition, behavior change, and education.
-
1,000+ hours supervised practice
-
Passage of national board exam
-
75+ hours of continuing education every 5 years
-
How long is a session?
-
Initial nutrition assessment: 60 minutes
-
Goal-setting session: 30 to 45 minutes
-
Support session(s): 30 to 45 minutes, depending on client need
How many sessions do I need?
-
All 1:1 nutrition education and counseling packages include a minimum of 3 sessions. This enables us to conduct a thorough nutrition assessment, review results, set goals, and create a fueling plan.
-
After that, you're in the driver's seat! We can continue working together until you're feeling confident in your nutrition habits.
How often will we meet?
-
The first 3 sessions will be completed over the course of one month.
-
Additional support sessions can be conducted weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly depending on client need.
Do you work with all ages?
-
Yes! I work with high school, college, and adult athletes. Youth and middle-school athletes are welcome, but parents are required to attend all sessions.
Do you work with parents and families?
-
Yes! I offer a Fueling Families program for parents who are looking to improve nutrition habits for the whole team.
-
This 3-session program helps families create a custom fueling plan that aligns with school and sport schedules.
-
This program provides families with personalized recommendations for meals, snacks, and groceries. It does not provide specific macro- and micronutrient recommendations.
Do you work with medical conditions?
-
Yes! Unlike nutritionists, Registered Dietitians are licensed to provide Medical Nutrition Therapy.
-
I can help athletes fuel for performance in the context of nutrition-related clinical conditions, such as eating disorders and disordered eating, REDS, diabetes, food allergies and intolerances, IBS, crohn’s, and ulcerative colitis.
Do you work with eating disorders?
-
Yes! However, individuals with diagnosed eating disorders must engage in a care-team approach, including medical supervision and mental health support.
-
Eating disorder care will include routine assessment of mental and physical wellbeing.
-
Outpatient services are not appropriate in all cases. Depending on client need, a higher level of care might be recommended.
Do you work with special diets?
-
Yes! I love working with athletes who have food allergies, intolerances, vegan and vegetarian diets, and other special nutritional needs. As a Registered Dietitian, I help athletes “replace, not restrict”.
What sports do you work with?
-
You name the sport, and I've helped athletes fuel for it.
-
I have extensive experience working with athletes from a wide range of athletic backgrounds, including track and field, wrestling, football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, golf, rowing, tennis, field hockey, gymnastics, and marching band.
-
I specialize in endurance fueling, including 5k, 10k, half-marathons, marathons, ultra-marathons, and triathlons.
Do you accept insurance?
-
Due to limited reimbursement for nutrition services, I do not bill insurance.
-
I accept HSA/FSA cards as a form of payment.
-
I can also provide a superbill for HSA/FSA reimbursement.
Are your services virtual or in-person?
-
Individual services are provided via HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform.
-
Group services can be provided in-person or via telehealth.
